Dryness & a damaged barrier

Skin that stings when you apply things it used to tolerate isn't sensitive skin. It's a broken barrier, and that's repairable.

The short answer: skin that is dry, flaky and suddenly stings is usually a damaged lipid barrier, not sensitive skin. The repair is subtraction: pause every acid, retinoid and scrub, drop to one gentle cleanse a day, and apply a real ceramide moisturiser twice daily onto damp skin. Most barriers recover in two to four weeks without anything else being added.

What's actually happening

Your barrier is a lipid mortar of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids holding skin cells together. Hot showers, foaming cleansers, over-exfoliation and air-conditioning all dissolve it faster than skin rebuilds. Once it thins, water escapes and irritants get in, so skin is dry, reactive and inflamed at the same time.

The honest part

Nothing repairs a barrier faster than leaving it alone. Stop the actives, drop to one gentle cleanse a day, moisturise with real ceramides, and most barriers recover in two to four weeks. The instinct to add more product is what keeps people stuck for months.

The approach

Four moves, in this order.

Step 01

Take things away first

Pause acids, retinoids and scrubs entirely. Not reduce. Pause. You can reintroduce them one at a time later.

Step 02

Replace the missing lipids

Ceramides in the correct ratio, applied twice daily, are the actual repair. Occlusives alone just slow the leak.

Step 03

Fix the water, not just the cream

Lukewarm showers, shorter ones. Hot water strips lipids more efficiently than most cleansers do.

Step 04

Moisturise on damp skin

Within three minutes of washing. The same product does noticeably more in that window.

Common questions

The ones people actually search.

Why is my skin so dry and flaky?

Because the lipid mortar holding your skin cells together, ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, is being stripped faster than it rebuilds. Hot showers, foaming cleansers, over-exfoliation and air-conditioning are the four usual culprits. Once that barrier thins, water escapes and irritants get in, so skin is dry and reactive at the same time.

How do you treat dry skin on the face?

Stop the actives entirely, not reduce them. Cleanse once a day with something non-foaming. Moisturise with ceramides within three minutes of washing, while skin is still damp, twice a day. Lukewarm water, shorter showers. Reintroduce actives one at a time only after the stinging has stopped for a full week.

Is niacinamide good for dry skin?

Yes, at sensible strength. Niacinamide supports ceramide production and is well tolerated at two to five percent. Above ten percent it can cause flushing and irritation on an already compromised barrier, which is the opposite of what dry skin needs. Concentration matters more than the ingredient's reputation.

Can dry skin be cured overnight?

The surface can be improved overnight with an occlusive layer, so skin looks and feels better by morning. The barrier underneath takes two to four weeks to rebuild, because that is how long the lipid layers take to reform. Overnight results are real but cosmetic; the repair is slower.
