Which sunscreen is best for dry skin?

For dry skin, choose a hydrating gel or cream sunscreen with humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin, at SPF 50+ PA+++, and apply it while skin is still slightly damp.

The short answer: for dry skin, look for a hydrating gel or cream sunscreen containing humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin, at SPF 50+ and PA+++ or higher. Apply it onto skin that is still slightly damp from moisturiser, which is when it spreads most evenly and feels least tight.

Why dry skin needs a different formula, not a different SPF

The protection figure does not change with skin type. What changes is whether the product is comfortable enough to wear in the quantity that produces that protection.

Dry skin tends to reject matte, alcohol-heavy formulations. They feel tight within minutes, cling to flaking, and emphasise texture rather than covering it. The result is that people with dry skin apply a thin, careful layer, which protects far less than the label suggests.

What to look for

Humectants in the formula

Hyaluronic acid and glycerin draw water into the upper layers. In a sunscreen this does two things: it stops the immediate tight feeling, and it helps the film spread evenly rather than dragging over dry patches.

A gel or lotion, not a powder finish

Dry-touch and matte finishes work by absorbing surface oil. On dry skin there is little to absorb, so the same technology reads as chalky.

Broad spectrum, as always

SPF 50+ against UVB, PA+++ or higher against UVA. Dry skin is not protected from photoageing by being dry.

Order of application

Moisturiser first, then sunscreen, and do not wait for the moisturiser to dry completely. Slightly damp skin gives a more even film. Sunscreen is always the last skincare step, before makeup.

Do not mix sunscreen into a moisturiser to save a step. Diluting it reduces the protection unpredictably, and the tested figure no longer applies.

Common questions

Can I use a moisturiser with SPF instead?

Only if you apply it in the quantity a sunscreen requires, which most people do not with a moisturiser. As a second line of defence it is useful. As the only line, it usually underperforms its label.

My sunscreen makes me flake. What is wrong?

Usually the formula is too drying, or it is being applied over skin that has not been moisturised, or over a barrier that is already compromised. Fix the barrier first, then choose a hydrating formula.

Does dry skin need sunscreen in winter?

Yes. UVA is roughly constant across the year and passes through cloud and glass. Winter changes how the product should feel, not whether you need it.
