How to read an ingredient list, and spot a token dose

The label is the only part of a skincare product that's legally obliged to tell you the truth. Here's how to make it.

The short answer: ingredients are listed in descending order by weight down to one percent, after which they can be listed in any order. Find the one percent line, usually where preservatives and fragrance appear, and any active below it is present in a token dose. Position on the list tells you more than the claim on the front.

The list is ordered, and that’s the whole trick

Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration, down to 1%. Below 1%, they can appear in any order the brand likes. That single rule gives you most of what you need: if the hero ingredient on the front of the box appears after the fragrance and the preservatives, it is present in a quantity that will do very little.

This is called label dressing, including a trace of a well-known active so it can be named on the packaging. It is legal, extremely common, and the main reason two products with apparently identical ingredient lists perform completely differently.

Finding the 1% line

You can estimate it. Preservatives are legally capped at around 1%. Fragrance, and thickeners like xanthan gum, are almost always used below 1%. Once you spot one of those, assume everything after it is present in trace amounts.

So: a serum listing niacinamide third, before the preservative, is a niacinamide serum. One listing it after the preservative, xanthan gum and fragrance is a serum with a niacinamide claim on the box.

Percentages, and when they’re meaningless

A stated percentage is more useful than none, but only against a known effective range. Niacinamide has good evidence at 2 to 5%; 10% adds little and irritates more. Alpha arbutin is supported at 2%. Salicylic acid works at 0.5 to 2%. A product advertising 20% niacinamide is not four times better than one at 5%. It’s a marketing number.

And percentage without form tells you little. 20% of a stable vitamin C derivative and 20% of pure L-ascorbic acid behave completely differently, in potency, in tolerance, and in how long they survive an Indian summer in your bathroom.

Six things worth noticing

  • Alcohol denat high on the list. Fine in a sunscreen for texture; a problem in a toner used twice daily on dry skin.
  • Fragrance or parfum in a leave-on product. The most common cause of contact reactions in products worn all day.
  • A very long list with a dozen extracts, all after the preservative. That’s decoration.
  • No ingredient list at all, or one only in an image on a marketplace listing. Walk away.
  • Fairness or whitening claims without a full list. Steroid and mercury adulteration in that category is a documented problem in India.
  • A short, boring list where the actives sit in the top five. That’s usually the good one.

Common questions

How do you find the 1% line on a label?

Look for phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, fragrance, or the colourants listed as CI numbers. These are almost always used below one percent. Everything after the first of them is unordered and present in small quantity, regardless of how prominently it is advertised.

Does a higher percentage of an active mean it works better?

Only up to each ingredient’s effective range, after which extra concentration adds irritation rather than benefit. Niacinamide works at two to five percent, vitamin C at ten to twenty, salicylic acid at one to two. A twenty percent niacinamide is a marketing number, not a better product.

What does ‘dermatologically tested’ actually mean?

That a test was carried out, not that it was passed, and not what was measured. It is one of the least regulated phrases on a carton. Verifiable claims name the test, the sample size and the duration.
