Vitamin C

Neutralises free radicals, interrupts excess pigment production, and is required for collagen synthesis.

What it actually does

Vitamin C is the most evidence-backed morning antioxidant available, and the most poorly formulated. Pure L-ascorbic acid is unstable. It oxidises in heat and light, which in Indian conditions can mean a bottle that's spent before it's finished. A stabilised derivative sacrifices a little potency for a formula that still works in month four.

What the evidence says about dose

Concentration is the wrong thing to shop on. A stable derivative at a modest percentage outperforms an unstable one at a high percentage that has already oxidised in the bottle, which is why the figure on the front of a pack tells you very little on its own.

What it pairs with

With ferulic acid and vitamin E, which multiply its antioxidant capacity. Then sunscreen. Vitamin C without SPF is half a routine.

Where to be careful

Don't layer in the same sitting as strong exfoliating acids; alternate morning and evening instead.

Formulated with it
