Tranexamic acid came to dermatology from haematology, and it treats a part of pigmentation most brightening agents ignore. Melasma involves inflammation and blood-vessel activity underneath the visible patch — which is why it recurs even after the surface lightens. Tranexamic acid interrupts that signalling, and it is one of the few actives with genuine clinical evidence in melasma specifically.
2–5% topically. Effects build over eight to twelve weeks; anyone promising faster is describing a different mechanism, usually a harmful one.
With kojic acid and niacinamide. Especially valuable for hormonal melasma, which resists single-active treatment.
