Derived from fungal fermentation, kojic acid binds copper at the active site of tyrosinase — the enzyme that starts the whole pigment cascade. It doesn't remove existing pigment; it reduces how much new pigment arrives while other ingredients clear what's already there. That distinction explains why it works steadily rather than dramatically.
1–2% is effective and well tolerated. Beyond that, irritation rises faster than benefit, and irritation itself causes pigmentation.
